![]() ![]() This course gives K-12 educators the opportunity to explore the important topics of climate change and environmental justice. The course begins with the fundamentals of weather, climate and global warming. The history of environmental justice and the emerging and growing climate justice movement is examined. Alongside this, the implications of the inequitable impact of climate change and global warming on marginalized communities is discussed and an opportunity to use the EPA EJSCREENING tool. The course also focuses on how to inspire change and action. There is a focus on the important role that getting students, especially those from inner-city and urban communities, out in nature to improve physical and mental health and inspire a commitment to care for the environment can play. Teachers will also examine how they and their students can partner with community organizations to access resources and amplify the voices of Black, Indigenous and People of Color (BIPOC) communities to address climate injustice. The course is facilitated by instructional leaders and subject matter experts and provides 15 Professional Development Hours or 1.5 Continuing Education Units. This empowering, facilitated, online program addresses the questions and challenges around teaching climate change. While not all extreme weather events are correlated to climate change, climate change is playing an increasingly primary role. During this Teaching Extreme Weather course, teachers will create a lesson or series of lessons focused on extreme weather that align to the Next Generation Science Standards as well as to State Standards for their grade level. The course prepares teachers to help their students understand the causes behind disruptive extreme weather events as well as what can be done to mitigate for them.
